What Your Signature Shade Says About You
Whether you realize it or not, the lipstick color that you’ve chosen is sending people a message about you that you may or may not be aware of. According to a recent study conducted by the CoverGirl parent company, Proctor & Gamble, changing it up can be helpful. In their recent study conducted among 2,375 subjects, the researchers presented the participants with images of nine women, wearing six different shades of lip color. The participants then made assumptions of the women’s personalities, rating attributes like how creative, reliable and professional they seemed, based on the shade they were wearing.

Based on their assumptions and the color-meaning behind the shades, here are some suggestions on the colors that you should consider wearing to accurately portray your message:

nude lipWorkday/Everyday:
The office is a conservative place, so you should choose colors that are close to your natural hue. Wearing a nude shade conveys that you are collaborative, caring and open. According to expert Karen Pine, style psychologist and author of Mind What You Wear, The Psychology of Fashion, “You want to be taken seriously, have nothing to hide and a lot to give. There’s a vulnerability and sensitivity to your approach.”

berry lipImportant Meeting/Power Shade:
Choosing a plum shade can make you come off as strong and confident, yet still approachable. This color portrays a unique combination of power and warmth. Burgundy shades tend to reflect the same connotation, that you have a strong and decisive character, but not so strong that you appear unapproachable. Another winning color approach, is a Brick Red; this color represents that you are earthy, warm, strong, sturdy and established. Again, another option to convey your strong character, yet still manage to maintain approach-ability.

pink lipFamily Get-Togethers:
Pink is the way to go with a family gathering or when meeting people for the first time, as its commonly associated with being fun-loving and sociable. You’ll want to stick to a lighter shade of pink, which portrays the characteristics of being soft, innocent and sweet. This is most definitely the go-to-color when meeting your beau’s fam for the first time. Steer clear of the bright  pink shades since they are associated with “power” and can make you come off as seductive. (Not a problem for a night out, but not what you want for family friendly events.)

red lipGirls’ Night Out/Date Night:
Alrighty ladies, this is when you can go bright and bold! Red, above all colors, commands the most attention from the human eye and has scientifically been proven to increases the pulse and heart rate, and raise blood pressure. Bright red suggests that you are exciting, energizing, confident, sexy, passionate and adventurous, to name a few. So if you’re in the mood to turn a few heads and increase a few heartbeats, this is your shade. While red hues are often seen as exciting and even sexually-aggressive colors, they can also evoke feelings of love and comfort, so this is an acceptable shade for a night out with the ladies as you “paint the town red”. Pun intended.

bright pink lipWedding/Cocktail Party:
Pink represents friendship, affection, and approach-ability. As previously mentioned, pink is associated with being “fun-loving” and “sociable”.  Kicking up the intensity notch by selecting a brighter hue adds an edge of passion and playfulness to your look.  According to Professional Image Consultant, Sandy Dumont,  “A fuchsia lip says you’re elegant and sophisticated, with a strong feminine streak” making this a perfect pout pick for a cocktail party or evening wedding.

coral lipWeekend Wear:
The weekend is a time for play and donning an orange or coral tinted lip conveys that you are joyful and ready for fun. Since orange is the blending of red and yellow it creates the perfect mixture of combining the energy associated with red and the happiness that is associated with yellow. Layer this citrus shade to your pout to add an edge of youthfulness, energy, and excitement.

How to Choose the Best Lip Color

UPDATE: NEW COLOR CHARTS (6/27/18)

All About That Base:
First things first, you’ll need to identify the base color of your skin. You either have more of a yellow (warm), or a pink (cool) tone. According to Women’s Health Magazine, 80 percent of women fall into the cool zone, but don’t just assume that you do.

Quickies:
A quick trick for determining your undertone is to evaluate the veins on the underneath side of your forearm in natural light. If your veins appear to be more on the blue side, you’re a cool; if they’re more of a green, you’re a warm. Another quick trick is to hold silver jewelry and gold jewelry up to your skin, and disregarding personal preference about which metal you favor, compare the two options to see which pairs the best with your coloring. Silver compliments cooler (blue) undertones and gold compliments the warmer (yellow) ones. Once you have identified your undertone, this will be beneficial in helping you narrow down which lipstick shade works best for you. Generally speaking, cool tones work better with fair skinned women and warm tones work better with the darker complexions.

Foul-Proof Options:
If all else fails, according to renowned makeup artist, Bobbi Brown, the most flattering lip colors will be one to two shades darker than your natural lip color. Her best piece of advice is to “find a lipstick that looks good on your face when you are wearing absolutely no makeup”. Another no-fail tip according to the pros, is to go with the universal shade for all, dusty-rose. This flattering, muted mauve color may be worn for daytime and evening events and flatters all skin colors and tones.

Rise to (err…Match to) the Occasion:
After you’ve sufficiently selected which undertone you are, you can get a little more adventurous with your selections and match your lipstick shade with the occasion and/or the message you want to convey.
